The first pipeline of the underground Trans Austria gas pipeline (TAG 1) was built in 1974 and therefore has asbestos-containing bitumen pipe insulation in some areas. In the course of small-scale repair work on insulation damage, sections (4m – 110m length) are exposed and stripped. As soon as asbestos has been detected, stripping is carried out by specialist asbestos companies in isolated renovation zones.

Within a procedure designed by CES and tested in 2016 at TAG 1, the carcinogenic asbestos fibers are to be professionally removed with the entire bitumen insulation of the pipe('asbestos felt') and the previously encapsulated abatement zones are cleaned as best as possible. Visual quality control takes place during and after the work. CES carries out the chemical and waste related site supervision on behalf of the gas network operator.
