In order to promote circular economy and material efficiency, a pollutant and contaminant exploration were carried out in accordance with the Austrian recycling ordinance prior to the demolition of a building in which the volume of construction or demolition waste exceeds a certain threshold. To ensure the remediation objectives and the safety measures for the protection of staff and the environment, as well as to confirm the rehabilitation success, the Chemical Site supervisor accompanied the owner and the construction site manager in the selection of the suitable abatement company and supervised if the pollutant removal works were in order. Within the project ‘NOx Emission Reduction – Phase 2’ (NOxER2), selected plants and buildings at the compressor stations in Grafendorf and Baumgarten were to be partly or completely demolished and replaced by modern, low-emission and energy-efficient systems. For the removal of the pollutants prior to demolition in the workshop building (e.g. tar layers with high PAH content as well as asbestos-containing fire protection doors and window sills) and in the compressor hall (high temperature wool resp. ceramic fibers and old rockwool in exhaust gas ducts and noise boxes), remediation work is required by a specific company. The Chemical site Supervisor approves the pollutant abatement work plan and supervises the appropriate works execution compliant to laws on occupational safety and waste, regularly.
