The investigation of buildings on the occurrence of pollutants is a necessity in Austria by federal law before any demolition can take place. It has to be conducted prior to the demolition of a building in which construction or demolition waste occurs above a certain volume threshold. Selected structures in the facilities of Grafendorf and Baumgarten were, therefore, subject to the survey. Selected plants and buildings at the compressor stations in Grafendorf and Baumgarten were to be partly or completely demolished and replaced by modern, low-emission, and energy-efficient systems. In the first phase, the site-, use- and construction situation were compiled using maps and historical documents in the context of the pollutant and contaminant investigations. In the second phase, the on-site investigation was carried out on pollutants and contaminants.

Before demolition works started, a site survey was carried out in the course of which material samples were drawn and analysed on their pollutant content. An abatement concept was compiled and served as a guideline for the specialised abatement company. Site supervision confirmed the abatement process, and documentation of the performed removal works and evaluation of disposed of products/masses proofed conformity. Air fiber measurements after finalisation of works and a final report completed the project.
